In the summer of 2000, hip-hop dance instructors Joshua T. Klipp and Jonathan de Lima teamed up to form Freeplay Dance Crew. Their goal was to establish a dance company for adults who spent working hours daydreaming about the opportunity to be a part of a hard working and dedicated dance company – creating, rehearsing, and performing hip hop dance.

Over the years, Freeplay has grown to over fifteen diverse, multi-talented company members. The group is well known in Bay Area circles, having performed at numerous hip-hop dance shows and other Bay Area events including the San Francisco Pride Festival, Trannyshack, the Faux Drag Queen Pageant, Club Q, and Gay Day at Great America. Freeplay regularly donates benefit performances, raising money for organizations such as Dance Mission, the Jon Sims Center for the Arts, Mercy High School Performing Arts Program, the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco, and the Nevada Theater Company. In September 2001, Freeplay produced its own showcase performance. Look for another such production in Spring 2004.

Freeplay Dance Crew is based out of the Embarcadero YMCA, where several group members teach weekly hip-hop classes. Membership is by audition only. Please check this site often for information regarding booking, dancers, schedules, upcoming auditions and performances.
